Just a quick note to let you know that we ARE seeing progress! Puppets have been made (with the exception of some wardrobe pieces), so now I just need to make a couple of miniatures, a couple of matte paintings and then it will be time to SHOOT!

I promised my director/partner to finish this Captain Keller story arc before we would continue on with new stories and specials (pressure, you see - it is a great motivator). So I'm working my butt off trying to get it all done so you can enjoy it. The stuff is looking good! Take a look at this augmented Geckoniki test if you don't believe me.

Halloween 2011 - The Captain is still absent...

Hey Kids,

Believe me when I tell you that no one is more mortified than me that we are not posting a Halloween Special this year. It is extremely disappointing. A script was written, props were made, but unfortunately, we could pull all of our resources together so get something in front of camera.

We dropped the ball. Okay, I dropped the ball.

Halloween is such a unique time of year and as I've told my family, this is the time of year when the creative well is filled. Although Autumn is traditionally the time of harvest, for me it is the time of planting. A time of renewal and inspiration. This year has been no exception.

Call it inspiration, afflatus, the eureka response, however you want to refer to it, know that it has permeated my creative soul and I'm ready to go back to work. Yes, much has suffered this month: my first person monster blog, my weekly column on film school rejects and my dear, dear Phantom Harbor. However on the other side of the scales: I've been writing a draft of Rick Baker's book that is due out next yeair, I sold two paintings in the October Shadows art show (the one pictured here is entitled "Shrumpkin Heads"), and I have made two new Pumpkin Peek-A-Boos! Hopefully, I'll get them licensed before the end of 2011 and they'll be on shelves in 2012.

So, now that things are quieting down, and I need to find a real (reel) job, perhaps now I'll be able to fulfill my obligations to Phantom Harbor and all of you.

Again, I appreciate your patience, interest and support. AND...I'll try to make a Halloween Special NEXT year that will be amazing. Anyone who thinks that they may want to play a monster, and lives in Los Angeles, NOW is the time to speak up!

Geckoniki Puppet Sculpture is Done!!!

You'll be pleased to know that the close up, insert Geckoniki hand puppet sculpt is complete!
Time to mold, cast, blah blah blah...and then FILM!!!! Take a look!

Also, check the VIMEO channel to see the Cap'n's return with a birthday greeting to a young man named Bill Bacarella!

Your patience will be rewarded, soon! With the Geckoniki finished, that is the most complicated, most labor intensive piece for the show yet!

Where the F*** are YOU?

Hey Kids -

I know that's what you are asking and yes, I've been very neglectful, but recently, I've had to step up, finish the cargo hold, and shoot it because, frankly, I need the room to build a new miniature (or two...).

So, I threw together some props (including a couple of discarded miniature palettes from Mike Deak, and an ancient Grecian head sculpt by Javier). The barrels were banks, and one was a construction made from apple sauce containers -

Basically, I threw the entire thing together in an afternoon and shot as many lighting set ups and angles and I could think of.

What will I do with it? I really don't know, but if we ever need to visit the cargo hold for any reason, it will just be a day of green screen element shooting.

In any case, as Phantom Harbor moves slowly to 10,000 views world wide, we know that more content is needed and will be coming soon.

Still working on the big Geckoniki puppet head, but hopefully will be finished that in the next couple of weeks.

In any case, the Captain may make an appearance soon, so check back on the site when you can, because he's a sneaky sort of a guy.

I've attached one of the shots of the cargo hold for you to enjoy, and until next time...

Geckoniki Hand Puppet Sculpt Progress

Hey Kids -

Just wanted to assure everyone that the one-man-band marches on. This is a quick post to show the latest progress on the Geckoniki Hand Puppet Sculpt. I posted a photo of the rough sculpt last year. As you can see it is coming along, but still has a long way to go. After all, I'm just showing you the right side, the left is still rough and the teeth are just temporary and there is no inner mouth...blah, blah, blah...

The good news is that I hope to finish the sculpt by the end of next month (God willing) and then we'll mold, cast, seam, paint - well, you know, finish and film the sucker!

Log Bridge Test

Hey Kids!

Just wanted to post the latest test shot. This is a matte painting of a log bridge that leads to the mysterious Geckoniki Temple.

The final elements aren't all there: The live action shot is just something I had lying around. It needs some clouds and birds and blurring and other tricks to heighten the effect. Oh, and it would be great if I finished the painting itself...

A Little Something to Tide You Over

I'm sure that it would be easy for you all to think that I'm lounging around, taking it easy, enjoying my gifts from Santa. Yes, that would be easy, but nothing is further from the truth. Work continues building, testing, writing, etc.

Halloween Special Announcement and Apologies

Hey Kids!

So, we managed to post our Halloween Special this week and although we LOVE the show, the quality is a bit less than we usually accept.

Why is this?

This is based on a couple of reasons and I'll try to spell them out for you. The first is THE CAMERA.

Lately we've been shooting 720dpi "Hi-Rez" 25 fps video using the Kodak Zi6. Now, as some of you may already know, I DO love that camera. But, I bet the folks at Kodak would agree that it has limitations due to a fixed, small lens and storage compression.

I was looking at old footage that we had shot using our Mini DV camera and there was richer quality to the video. True, it isn't HD quality, but the lens is better and the format seemed sound. I made the decision to shoot the live action DV, and the visual effects HD.

Now this isn't uncommon even in the analog world. For years, Douglas Trumbull, VFX Artist of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, would shoot his VFX elements on 70mm vs. the traditional 35mm of most traditional motion pictures. When you "shrink" the 70mm image down to 35 you get a better product just by the nature of the reduction.

The second reason is my image conversion philosophy.

So here's where I messed up. Instead of shrinking the HD to DV, I tried to blow up the DV elements to fit the final HD upload and it had the same effect of blowing up Super 8mm or 16mm film to 35. The colors are washed out and the image is soft.

Even though I think the show still works, I can't let it sit. I'm going to go back...reduce the HD elements import them in the DV timeline and then RE-POST the show on Halloween so it can be seen in its FULL GLORY!

Thanks for being such patient fans of the show. We keep trying to introduce new stuff and make it fun!

News Update Number 1

Hey Kids!

So much time has gone by since I've posted any news, and the reason why is very simple: we've been VERY busy preparing big things for Phantom Harbor. There is SO much new news that I'm going to split this post into smaller posts to let you in on all of the exciting developments at the Harbor!

A few months ago, I joined SINISTER SPACE which is like FACEBOOK for Halloween fans. I set up a Phantom Harbor fan page and was contacted by the author of horror site named MR. FRIGHTS.

We communicated via e-mails and he ended up interviewing me about Phantom Harbor. The interview can be found here: http://www.mrfrights.com/phantomharbor.html

Phantom Harbor Blog EXCLUSIVE!

Hey Kids,

So I won't be posting this ANYWHERE else! We appreciate your patience while we continue working on the second half of our riveting "Captain Keller" story line and again, I apologize at the wait you have all endured. That said, I want to share with you why it is taking so long to finish the darned thing.

Here is a test for a matte painting I did last night (there are at least TWO more that I have to do). I don't have the necessary elements to complete the final shot, however I put this together to get an IDEA how it will all come together in the end.

Instead of the Captain entering the mysterious Geckoniki temple, I used an existing green screen shot of the Goblin; so technically he has entered the building first.

The final shot will have foreground elements (including bubbling lava pits!) and matched lighting on the Captain element. But you can see how effective this simple painting is going to be within the context of the story!

Hey Kids!

So, things are heating up again here at the Harbor. This week should bring you what we are calling "Harbor-scopes" brought to you by our genie-buddy, Chando!

Yes, he was irritating granting our Captain's wishes, but in divining your future, he is as accurate as any other astrologer out there!

Here's how it works: Every month, Chando will gaze at the stars and then record a video report for that month. August's forecast will be available later this week.

I know, I know, you're excited as heck! How can you find this precious information?

But, Shannon, I've looked and I don't know where to find the "Message" section.

The Message center is in the Captain's Quarters for the time being. Soon, it will more obvious as we continue to overhaul the site.

New Vids, New Sculpts!

Hey Kids!

So what a busy few weeks we've had here at the Harbor!

First of all, let's talk about the two great new videos that are now on the Vimeo Channel.

One is a new Phantom Harbor Promotional Video set to the tune of the theme from MANNIX! Something about the great sounds of Lalo Schiffrin really blended with the lunacy of Phantom Harbor. It's a great combination.

Second is parody of the trailer for a recent French film entitled "Mademoiselle Chambon." Tracy Shea, our live action director and my wife, and yours truly saw the trailer this weekend whilst trying to find SOMETHING to watch in the movie theaters.

The trailer was so pretentious that we HAD to lampoon it and did we ever. The resident Goblin was all too happy to assist us with our efforts.

Today, work began on the Geckoniki hand puppet. Working strictly from scratch, I had to build the armature from the ground up (proudly with pieces I had just lying around here). I managed to get SOME clay on it after a couple of hours. It's rough, but you can see the direction it's heading (no pun intended).

More Birthday Fun!

Hey Kids!

Along with the Summer heat, July brought with it, another birthday video request. As discussed in an earlier blog entry (see Slow Motion Sail), this video was made for Donna Moore, who is running for Town Council in Port Norris, New Jersey.

Donna's husband, animator Steve Moore, wrote the Captain (at TheCaptain@phantomharbor.com) and gave him the particulars of Donna's upcoming election - hoping this could be worked into the greeting.

Never one to disappoint, our ol' Cap'n came through again, not just having the resident Goblin raise a sail with Donna's election logo on it, but also making an "in" joke about her opponent.

Seems that the opponent in question openly referred to his fellow Town Council members as "idiots" on his Facebook page. Doesn't he know that nearly anyone can read those posts?

All in all, everything worked out for Donna's birthday and it has turned out to be one of the most watched birthday videos on our vimeo channel here: www.vimeo.com/channels/phantomharbor

Phantom Harbor and the SDCC

Hey Kids!

So, needless to say, I've been invited to join many of my friends to attend the San Diego Comic Con. The last time I attended the convention was 2004 (?) when Sandy Collora premiered his BATMAN: DEAD END movie. I had gone in previous years and, yes, had a fairly good time but like Mardi Gras in New Orleans - it has just gotten too big and dangerously out of control for my taste.

When G4 does "live broadcasts" from the convention floor, I know that it is time to stay home. Of course, if there was going to be a PHANTOM HARBOR booth and I was safely in my little cubicle, that might be different, but to be among the costumed rabble being pushed past an Ironman display - well, let's just say I'm sure I would feel my age then.

The San Diego Comic Con is a necessary gathering. It is the closest thing that genre entertainment has to American Idol. It is a direct connection between would-be creators and their public. Would it do me and Phantom Harbor any good to go down there and peddle the show? Of course it would. I, personally, am not equipped to do it. I can barely do Monsterpalooza, which I guarantee is 1/1000th of the turn out and only three days.

It is bittersweet for me. I feel like Chuck Yaeger standing on the tarmac watching my fellow pilots fly off to become astronauts all the time thinking "spam in a can."

But - no regrets! I have things to do: characters to sculpt/complete, storyboards, miniatures to design and build...all in my new art room! Yay!

So for all of you at the Comic Con, I wish you the best! Hope you sell past your quotas, meet your idols, sell your screenplay/comic/novel/art and when it is over I hope you find your way safely home with a little money still left in your wallets/purses.

Original Sail Test

So now you can feel my disappointment. Not that I don't like how the message turned out - quite the contrary - It just kills me that it could have been BETTER!

New Birthday Video

Hey Kids!

By the time most of you will read this it will be July 15th and Donna Moore, the latest recipient of a Phantom Harbor Birthday Greeting will have watched and re-watched her video enough times to be sick of it. First of all, Happy Birthday Donna! We certainly had a great time making your video.

Because we try to keep certain elements of our videos secret (oh yes - it is SO important what is going on at Phantom Harbor ;-) ) I try not to reveal what we're building so that you won't be caught up in the process but will instead (we hope) just be entertained.

The "big ticket item" this time was a miniature mast and sail. This was something I've been wanting to build for a long time but just never had the opportunity or need. So, with an investment of about $6 I built what you see to the left (as Beyonce would say).

True, my pack rat nature had provided me with plenty of the building blocks: (pvc pipe, muslin fabric, twine, spray paint, etc.) Tracy sewed the sail (which was outside of her comfort zone) and I can't thank her enough. I built the mast with wooden dowels I assembled with hot glue.

On the day it was completed, I shot a really cool test of the wind billowing the sail in slow motion and it really had weight and drama, so you can imagine how excited I was the next day to shoot it for real.

There was a slight breeze coming in from the South/West and in order to shoot the mast free from my suburban location, it was important to elevate it as high as possible and shoot up at it. This was accomplished by setting the piece up on a ladder but because the wind was blowing and the base was 2 feet x 3 feet, I needed something ballast. A weight to counteract the wind.

I grabbed a gallon of paint.

Yes.

It did exactly what you think it would do. The wind filled the sail and pulled the entire base, with the paint onto the ground. Like a true artist, I grabbed the mast before it hit the ground and got ruined but not before the paint can hit the ground and exploded like a cannon...barely missing my neighbors WHITE JAGUAR CAR!

After a multitude of apologies and my high-powered hose, the driveway where I was shooting was cleaned and the sail was again on the ladder, this time weighted with a 25 pound bag of wet clay, with Tracy and my neighbor watching to make sure it didn't crash down again.

Magic hour (sunset) was approaching and I was trying to get a good shot of the sail when it happened - nothing. No wind. No breeze. Barely a God-fart disturbed the air and I had to shoot. I set up the shot, rolled camera to no avail.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. The video message stands on its own and in some ways is better because you can read Donna Moore's campaign sign (which was printed and affixed to the sail) clearly. In the future, I will re-film the sail to be used in other episodes (for dramatic effect!)

Alls well that ends well, and I certainly hope that Donna Moore had a great birthday and has great success this November during the Port Norris, New Jersey election!

Meeting with John Criswell

On Friday, I was visited by John Criswell who revealed his animatronics for our special surprise next episode. What can I say besides, GENIUS!?

UPDATE!

Hey Kids!

So this week saw the completion of the mold begun on Monday. It has been "cored" which means a carefully designed form to displace the liquid foam rubber and create a skin, has been completed.
That core has been molded and turned over to master mechanic:

John Criswell! of Henson's Associates.

John is an extremely talented animatronic designer and puppeteer. His specialty is to do the impossible, so when I contacted him and presented him with the challenge he got excited!

The foam skins will be run this week and I'll work on the cosmetic finishing while John works on the mechanics. With any luck this new character will be finished in a few weeks!

But oh, my few but dear fans, that isn't the end...There are still miniature sets, and two more sculpts of very necessary characters before pick up shooting can commence on this episode but the momentum is there!

Our live action director (and my talented wife) Tracy, said that we had missed our June goal, but we hope to get it done for July!

That's a fair question. Here's the answer: I'm still building. That's the bad news. The good news is this: 90% of the episode is already cut! But I can't short you all on an adventure on Geckoniki Island. Sure, I could write some B.S. bit of comedy that could get our Captain on and off the island with nary a brush with the headhunters there, but what fun would that be?

No, no, no! I'm working to ensure that you will have a great time and feel rewarded for your patience. So, worry not! We haven't just STOPPED! Oh no....I will say this in all confidence:

Expect big things.

It's Coming Soon: Monsterpalooza 2010 Report

I've seen it! I've seen what The Captain has put together to give those of you who missed MONSTERPALOOZA 2010: a taste of what you can see if you attend one of these gatherings.

Mind you, it is a taste. There is so much to see and do at Monsterpalooza and if you are a fan of monster makers, you won't find a larger collection of artists in attendance than this event.

Eliot Brodsky is the organizer and he works tirelessly to insure that attendees have TONS of eye candy to see, cool stuff to buy, and lots of guests to meet during their visit. And, I can say that The Captain had a lot of fun meeting his fans live in person:

BLOG PIRATES!

Hey Kids!

Sorry for the delay, and be prepared because there will be a MONSTERPALOOZA 2010 report soon, but first let us talk about BLOG PIRATES!

After I post this, I'm sure I'll regret it, but I have to express my complete dissatisfaction with the opportunity that was offered me from godaddy.com to switch this blog from Google's blogger to wordpress.org.

Now, I'm sure that wordpress.org is a great place to create and keep a blog. I've also been told it is the more "professional" place to host a blog, but if that is the case, you won't see me posting professional blogs any time soon.

I went into my godaddy account, loaded the software and tried to create this fantastic blog I was promised. What I got was a bland looking foundation that it was my understanding that I would be able to customize to my tastes.

Upon trying the Username and Password provided to me via e-mail I was unable to access the account. Upon entering the username and password I had chosen while setting up the account, that too, got me nothing.

I wrote Wordpress and received very complicated instructions (most of which did not work btw) to try to force a password change to gain access. Not so good.

What this means is that I am not going to attempt to set up my wordpress account and I'm staying HERE at BLOGGER! You know, I'm not a rabid blogger and I'm not followed by that many folks. The fantastic, rare individuals that actually READ this blog are getting the information as I'm writing it so why change now?

This blog is linked in my web site so if someone REALLY wants to read what's up at Phantom Harbor behind the scenes, this is the place. AND if The Captain decides he wants to write a blog account of his old adventures, he, too will begin a BLOGGER account and we'll figure out a way for you generous folks to read it.

So we have repelled the blog pirates for now! Blogger we are here to stay!

Work is Underway for the Next Episode!

Hey Kids!

WOW! So I've tipped my hand about the fate of Geckoniki Island, but honestly what did you think? That's like saying that you're going to make a Western without any horses! Tropical Island locales DEMAND volcanoes! It's just that simple.

So for those of you who love "Making Of" type stuff, let me explain: I shot a sort of a cloud tank shot for the plume of smoke. Now I've NEVER attempted something like this before in my life, so it was pretty exciting. I made a base for clear Tygon tubing that could be weighted at the bottom of an aquarium and hooked two syringes to the tubing with connectors.

I used white paint that Alex Diaz and Carey Jones, of KNB, pumped for me while I filmed on my trusty Zi-6! All of this against a lit green screen. Next time, I would use milk instead of paint which was heavy. My guess is that milk, which contains fat, would float rather than sink making a more impressive cloud.

What we got was really cool. Not perfect by any means, but really cool. The video here is a test. Once I have more elements to combine, it should be cooler.

So, back to work. More puppets to make, miniatures to construct and art to generate.

Conversation With Phantom Harbor Composer, Andy Schoneberg

Hey Kids!

So as some of you may have noticed, Phantom Harbor received a new musical theme. This was thanks to Andy Schoneberg, who is not just a very talented sculptor and make up artist, but turns out to be a talented composer as well.

Andy has worked in Special Effects Make Up for over 20 years and has contributed his incredible talents to films like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, TERMINATOR 2, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS just to name a few.

I spoke with him recently to ask about his involvement with Phantom Harbor*

Shannon Shea: How did your first get involved with Phantom Harbor?

Andy Schoneberg: I've been wanting to be involved with Phantom Harbor for a long time; it's a cool project. So when I overheard Garrett (Immell) and Kevin (Wasner) talking about your difficulties with YouTube*, I thought to myself, I wonder if I could come up with something.

SS: How did you put it together:

AS: I do a lot of work with GARAGE BAND (music composing program) and I listened to the opening music from your pilot episode to get a feel for what you were looking for.

SS: Did you have any idea that it was the theme from the film THE HAUNTED PALACE?

AS: No, I just listened to it for the different musical cues it contained and then started figuring it out. I began with the violin staccato beat and then composed the violin melody that is picked up by the bass. Once that foundation was done, I added the other instruments then finally the timpani which is kind of like the spice of the piece.

SS: So is the theme composed of "loops" or was it written using individual notes?

AS: I have a little keyboard (USB) that hooks directly into the computer and "jam packs" which are "instruments" that I compose with. I play the guitar, but when I work with GARAGE BAND, I'm more interested in Orchestral Compositions and this was a great opportunity.

SS: You know I love it. Did you have any idea that I would time the gong crash with the blowing out of the match?

AS: No, but it matched perfectly!

Music is such an integral part of any show and to have Andy on board now is an honor and a RELIEF! He hopes to widen his influence by composing more incidental music for the show as well as a theme for our resident Goblin! So what's he sitting around talking to me for?! He's got music to compose!

Part 2 gets a Title!

Hey Kids!

"Rescue from Geckoniki Island" is the working title of the next episode of Phantom Harbor! The action will pick up right where "A Cry From Captain Keller" left off as Captain McAllister lands on the shore of Geckoniki Island.

As for the Geckoniki's and Captain Keller, I'll post some photos as things are made. I don't want to tip the hat too far.

Most of the live action shooting was completed in December 2009 but there are still some key scenes that need to be shot (and written for that matter) but we hope to be up by June.

Those of you who are avid fans will "feel the wait" but I'm desperately trying to increase our viewing base so that by June, we have a nice community all joining the Captain on his journey to this tropical hell!

A CRY FROM CAPTAIN KELLER

Hello Kids!

So, as many of you already have seen, A CRY FROM CAPTAIN KELLER was posted on the Phantom Harbor Site, YouTube, and Vimeo simultaneously this Saturday, March 27th.

This episode finally takes the beloved Captain off of the Sofia Maria and transports him to locations exotic. The next episode will more full exploit the island and I'm sure that you won't be disappointed.

Yes, I know there are sound issues but thanks to Tracy Shea, my wife and live action director, we hope to sort those out before the next episode airs in June.

Now, for me, this was the biggest news: The reading of our first "fan written" poem on the show. Lucia Fasano, on her own accord, wrote the short poem at the Fasano Family table at Monsterpalooza last year. Upon receiving it, Tracy and I knew we HAD to do SOMETHING with it other than post her drawing in the gallery.

So, after getting her permission, I set out animating short segments to reflect her tentacled beastie to include it on the show and her father, John, wrote and told me that she LOVED it.
Mission accomplished!

This should be the START of this kind of audience participation. We ENCOURAGE you to send in your photos, drawings, writings, letters, questions, whatever....We want YOU to be as excited as we are to put the show on.

Goblin HD Shoot!

Ahoy Boys and Girls!

So big news...well, big for us here. Today was the first time we've shot the Goblin puppet on High Definition. We are now shooting on the Kodak Zi-6 (hopefully, the Zi-8 soon!) and getting much cleaner composites because of the higher pixel count!

Let this be a lesson to all of you garage filmmakers. Hi-def is now just $150.00 away! And by the way, check out this incredibly practical home set up! Ridiculous! But anyway, this gets all of us closer to the new episode, so stay tuned!

Ahoy!

Thanks to our friends at youtube, I have changed the music for the opening titles to an original assembly. Like many of you, I loved the HAUNTED PALACE theme (having animated to it) but seeing that this music is for a very popular* movie and my use of it for a free web series undermines tons of royalties it should be generating, I am complying and discontinuing the use of it.

I'm no musician, sadly, and I don't wish to lean on any of my super-talented musician friends to step up and compose something for me for free - ugh, no way. So, I submit this to you all and await your feedback. If it sucks, so be it - I'll figure something else out before the next episode airs later this month.

Ahoy there, friends!

I know, I know, I know, I know...no new Christmas Message this year and of that I'm as disappointed as you. Unfortunately my paying job on PREDATORS required my complete attention up until Christmas Eve.

The good news is that during my one day off a week, a group of friends and I have been shooting footage for not one but TWO episodes concurrently! Gino Crognale, long time friend and Special Make Up Effects artist has been driving production in Austin, Texas. Dave Wogh, miniature maker and animatronics expert has been providing special props and his keen eye and experience to the specialized shooting.

So what can I tell you about what is coming up? Well, since the set is in California and we're in Texas, prepare for the Captain to be out and about in the world more. Prepare for new creatures and animation. Phantom Harbor is getting kicked up a notch for the new decade.

The show is 12 minutes long and that is on purpose. It is a Halloween SPECIAL, in the vein of an old Andy Williams Christmas Special (yes, I'm showing my age). That said, I wouldn't cut a minute. We've all worked dilligently to give you as many Halloween Treats as we were able to, so INDULGE!

Plans Underway for PHANTOM HARBOR special!

Hey Kids!

So, I know that you have all been patient while I worked out some personal distastrophes but since the season is nearly upon us, it stands to reason that a new PHANTOM HARBOR HALLOWEEN SPECIAL should be produced.

Now I know that you are already rolling your eyes.

Where's the second episode already?! Yes, yes, it is coming, but until I can complete the animation, you'll just have to be happy with a new seasonal show full of Halloween Tricks and Treats! The fellow in the video above is receiving some choreography for his musical number.

So stay tuned! Just as soon as the episode is completed, there will be a big announcement. Oh, and by the way, here is a frame from the animation (limited animation mind you so don't get all crazy on me) from episode 2:

For My Father

As you will all understand, the production of PHANTOM HARBOR has halted due to my father's unexpected turn of health a few months ago.

Initially, the doctors thought the cancer was localized in his bladder and after two unsuccessful operations, the decision was made to remove the entire bladder.

Tracy, Molly and I flew to New Orleans a week before his scheduled surgery and spent as much time with him as we could. As usual he was gracious, but it was obvious that he was being gregarious through a great deal of pain.

While we were there, they pushed the surgery to August 4th (yesterday).

During the procedure, it was discovered that my father's abdomen was fraught with cancer and there was nothing they could do but sew him back up.

At this writing, my father has been transferred out of ICU and is going into a room. In a day or so, he'll be transferred to a hospice. His physician informed me that with "aggressive" life saving techniques, the best they would hope for is 2 weeks.

This decision will be handled by him and my siblings.

I'm just thankful that we got to spend some precious time with him before this unfortunate turn of events.

So...barring any legal action...this is for my Dad.

Hey Kids!

Next time you visit the ole Harbor, check out the newly installed GALLERY section! So darned exciting that I don't know what I'll do!

So here's how it works: WRITE THE CAP'N! You know how to do THAT! Ask him for a coloring or drawing sheet and he'll send them to you to fill out, scan, and send back to him!

There are three sections: Minnows, for young kids. Sharks, for older kids. And Mariners for young adults and adults. That way, if you don't want your youngins to see anything too scary, you can just navigate through the shallows.

So send your art and I'll post it. That is, as long as it is appropriate. No graphic stuff, please! I'm trying to run a family site here folks!

Pick up your pencils, crayons, markers, paints (sculpt and take a photo!) but whatever you do - send it in!!!!

Carving the new Lighthouse Base

Hey Kids!

So with the big MONSTERPALOOZA event looming on the horizon, I decided that the Spooky Lighthouse needed a new base. The old one, though functional and cool, is only wood and aluminum foil painted with a little sawdust and plants to dress it. It would never survive the convention and I want to make sure I have the model on display.

Using a piece of scrap gold foam, I've begun carving a special display base.

Friends I've NEVER carved gold foam before in my life and although it is messy as hell, it is extremely rewarding and effective. So, only after about 2 hours I managed to do this:

The flat spot in front is where I will add the PHANTOM HARBOR logo!
Crazy cool folks! Just one of the little surprises that you'll see at the table when you drop by at the convention!

Guess Who's Back On Board????

Hey Kids!

Another birthday request, and a special friend showed up to help the Captain relay his birthday wishes! After not being around for a few videos and getting a hold of the new "Goblin-Free" script for Episode 2 (illegally I may add), The Goblin begged to be back on the show. What could we do? He was, after all, our first monster so we brought him back for this special, quickly turned-around birthday greeting.

We're not going to tell him, but we ALWAYS intended to bring him back when the time was right and he can always find a child's bed to lurk under in the meantime. He'll still getcha if you don't watch out!

Cargo Hold Set Painted!

Hey Kids!

I know you are tired of seeing incomplete set construction; I am too. However, in the spirit of taking you step-by-step through "the process" I finished constructing the Cargo Hold set and painted it today so I felt that after completing something this profound, you all would like to take a little walk in it with me.

Now, it needs to be dressed with...well...cargo (you know, crates and barrels - hey, maybe I should just go to Crate & Barrel to dress the set? Nah, I doubt they have what I need). In any case, you know what this means???? It means it is nearly time to film the live action portion of Episode 2! Just need to get EELKA all squared away and then we go, go, GO!

Thanks again for your patience. It is a long process, but believe me it will be worth it!

Pilot Episode Breaks 1000 Views!

Hey Kids!

I know that number doesn't seem like a lot, especially when you consider that a dog having a nightmare can do 300 times the views (hell, I lost count of how many times I watched him run into the wall), but it is a symbolic victory for "the little horror show that could."

Thanks to you and your unending support and patience, I now know that we CAN! We will endure despite the time lag between episodes and all of the work that I do personally to produce one 10 minute video.

I always said that when the time was right, that great things would come raining down and now over the past few weeks I can safely say that a generous amount of accomplishments have come to pass:

1.) The Monsterpalooza Announcement was finished - Trust me, this was a biggie. All of that animation was drawn by yours truly and then assembled and then RE-assembled once there was a chain of venue! Then it got posted a bunch of places (including AOL TV and here, of course)

2.) The T-Shirt Design was FINALLY finished. Again, a lot of agonizing went into producing this relatively simple design. Over this past weekend, I mocked up one using transfer paper and I will say this: It totally rocks! I believe everyone will be satisfied.

3.) Two birthday videos were completed. No small task, let me tell you. New props, new footage, all fun and sent ON TIME! Wowwee!

So now, it is back to Episode 2 and Monsterpalooza preparation. There's much activity in Phantom Harbor and I thank you , thank you for your continued support.

FINAL Phantom Harbor T-Shirt Design!

Hey Kids!

I know, I know, I know, I know...the web site has been up since October (6 months, YAY!) and the first episode has just reached 1000 hits and I've been promising T-Shirts for a LONG time.

Without going into a labored history, let's just say that I couldn't make up my mind as to what image I thought would best illustrate what we're trying to do with the show and the site.

There were some early ideas that were artistically interesting but somehow didn't capture the fun I hope Phantom Harbor offers its fans. I had even enlisted the help of a talented graphic designer from Great Britain, Steve Noden, to give it a shot, and he did an awesome job, but something just wasn't right.

Finally, it hit me and I drew it up, colored it very specifically, and everyone that I've showed it to is THRILLED. So without further ado, here is the front:

Hold Set Progress Report

Hey Kids!

So as you can see above, the set is getting close to being done! Two more walls to finish, paint, and then we start to dress it for filming! Exciting stuff, time consuming, but ultimately very rewarding!

With a bit of luck, plate photography will happen next weekend. Next order of business is prosthetic manufacturing which hopefully will commence early this week.

Miniature Set Tour!

Hey Kids,

I know, I know, I know....it's been far too long since you've received an update and believe it or not, there has been a very good reason. I'm building, drawing, recording, and calling in favors to get this next episode done! I've included above a very brief tour of the miniature set of the hold where the action between EELKA and The Captain will take place. It isn't much to see right now, but once the slats are in place and it is painted, dressed and lit, it should be VERY effective.

Who is EELKA? She is the Sea Witch that has cursed our poor Captain for reasons that will become evident as the show progresses. Here is a charcoal sketch of the make-up design:

On a sour note, my trusty laptop took a dump and now I have to get the harddrive out of it, retrieve all of my precious data and continue with a new computer. TECHNOLOGY! UGH! Still, without it, you might NEVER see an episode of PHANTOM HARBOR.

Lastly, a talented Britain-based artist, Steve Noden, is finishing up a design for the Phantom Harbor T-Shirts. Hopefully, we'll get that sorted out before the end of the month.

Progress Report - February 1, 2009

Hey Kids!

So by the look of the photo on the right, you can see that building has begun for the next episode of PHANTOM HARBOR - "If At First You Chase a Ghost." This is going to be the port hold of the Sofia Maria.

It is a foam-core, cardboard construct and the scale is bigger than an old fashioned G.I. Joe Doll. As you can see the depth of field is going to work out fine. The live action elements will be shot green screen and composited into this environment.

The goal is to expand the locations of this episode so that it does not have the same confined feel as the first episode. What this translates into is much more prep work that has to get done before the episode is filmed.

The animation audio has been taped and the performances are fantastic. The artwork for the animation should begin this week. Production has BEGUN!

Hey Kids!

So we're back at it full force at Phantom Harbor producing the second episode that I'm sure all of you will LOVE more than the pilot.

As you can see by the image, we'll be moving out of the one Captain's Quarters and venturing to new locations and introducing all sorts of new characters.

Recording of the actors for the animated story begins next week which means that the art work will commence next week and there are even MORE surprises....Can you stand it?

I've contacted the good folks at CHROMATEK and will be producing a portion of the next animated show in Chromatek 3-D! You heard right: 3-D! As soon as I get the glasses, I'll be advertising so that you can order your glasses in the mail! Of course, the show can be viewed without the glasses but I can assure you that it won't be as much fun!

So until then, I'm going back to the Harbor and hope to see you all soon!

Happy 2009!

Hey Kids -

So after a brief sabbatical, I've returned to the Harbor to continue this blog and production of Phantom Harbor.

The script for episode 2 is nearly complete, just a few minor adjustments and we're on our way. Creature designs are progressing nicely and with some luck, we'll get it all going presently.

Unfortunately, because of the lull toward the end of 2008 in Motion Picture production, January has turned out to be a busy month. The industry is still fearing a Screen Actors' Guild strike (which, unfortunately SHOULD happen) so everyone is pushing their projects quickly to avoid shut down. What that means to Phantom Harbor fans is that my attention is split between the demands of my day job, and those of Phantom Harbor.

I'm going to produce some personal messages to individuals who have expressed interest. I might cut together a promo for MONSTERPALOOZA (which I'll be attending with some props from the show). But the long range goal is still there - get episodes completed and posted.

Finally, my friend, Kevin McTurk, shot some awesome photos of The Captain that will be appearing on the site soon.

Christmas Eve

Hey Kids -

So, here it is, early, early Christmas Eve -
I'm looking at the weather forecast which predicts
rain for the next three days.
I barely got our tree up tonight, put some lights
on the house, bought a turkey for dinner tomorrow
evening...It really has been a last minute affair.

Still have not finished Christmas shopping and I'm going
to brave the last minute madness and inclement weather
to do so!

But Christmas comes once a year and through all of the
madness, and self-imposed deadlines, if you look closely
enough you can truly see miracles. You can find people
who are coming together as families and communities
if for nothing else, because it is tradition and that's what
they have always done.

Sure they'll be bickering and disappointment and holiday
greed, but there will also be reunited families, giving, sharing
and creating memories that will last lifetimes.

So, as I leave the Harbor for a few days to spend with my
tiny but loving family, I want you all to know that I send
my warmest wishes to each and every one of you this
season and I hope that the good things that Christmas
can inspire come to you in excess.

Hey Kids!

So there's good news and bad news...what's it gonna be?

Okay, first the bad news:

The Ole Cap'n didn't get to finish his Holiday Message yet.
Still one last thing to do before it's cut and posted. With the
help of a Christmas miracle, maybe this will happen on Monday,
Dec. 22nd.

Oh, and to you who celebrate: Happy Hanukkah! Now begins the what???
Eight Nights of celebration! Awesome! You know what makes a fantastic

I'm Back in the Harbor, Again...

Hey Kids,

Would have said "Back in the Saddle, but trust me, there is no sign of a horse ANYWHERE around the Harbor.

Sorry about the lack in posting but I've been a bit busy with Non-Harbor stuff, however as this Yuletide approaches, Tracy and I went back to the Harbor to get a message from the Captain to all of you out there on the Internet.

Realizing that I sound like the Boy Who Cried Wolf, but with a little Christmas Magic, the Captain's Quarters should be re-organized and the Captain's Message Board should be up and running so GO CHECK IT OUT later this coming weekend.

OKAY, OKAY - What about the Phantom Harbor swag?

Yeah, I promised so where is it?

Technically it is up at Cafepress.com. Why am I not fired up about it? Why haven't many of you received enthusiastic e-mails alerting you to the fact that you could be wearing a Phantom Harbor T-Shirt or Hoodie? I'll tell you why: 1.) Not crazy about how the product is made 2) Not crazy about the prices.

I understand how Cafepress works and they have the right to make as much money on their "produce by demand" items, but I'm not confident about their direct ink printing on T-Shirts, nor their "thermal plastic" applications for dark fabrics. Sounds like a small commercial upgrade from the specialty papers you buy at Staples to make those T-Shirts that split and crumble after a couple of washings.

That's not what I want from Phantom Harbor products.

That's not what YOU want from Phantom Harbor products.

I'm currently trying to eek out some time with the multi-talented Jeff Himmel, a Special Make-Up Effects Artist friend and all-around-nice-guy to hook me up with a professional silkscreening company. Let's face it, that's THE only way to go.

As soon as that happens, I'll invest the capital and go into production and hopefully get affordable T-Shirts to everyone.

Postcards and T-Shirts

Hey Kids!

Just wanted to update you with what's happening at the Harbor!
So, change in plans...I'm going to hold off on the CafePress store until
I hear back from a good friend, Jeff Himmell, who I've been told is
THE silkscreen connection. I'd rather make some nice, kick ass T-shirts
than a compromised design. I want you guys to be happy with your
purchases and proud to wear the things! If it doesn't look good,
you're not going to wear it - so bear with me just a wee bit longer.

Tuesday, Dec. 9th, the new shipment of postcards arrive. I'll be
sending them all over the country to some of the finer comic book
stores so be on the look out.

Lastly, I know how patient you've all been waiting for new video
content. Let's just say that I know that the Captain wants to send
his holiday greetings to you all, so he'll be recording a message soon.
When it is done it will appear in the new revamped Captains Quarters.

Rest In Peace - Forrest J. Ackerman

Hey Kids...

I thought it appropriate to say a few words about a man who influenced a generation of monster fans all over the world.

"Editor Forry" of Famous Monsters of Filmland will forever be missed. But it isn't as if we weren't missing him already. I know I'm not going to make any fans by saying this, but the rise of Star Wars and the '80's "Splatter Films" really were the death of Forry's pun-filled, tongue-in-cheek fan mag that so many of us loved and hated simultaneously. True fans know what I'm talking about.

Beneath the usual beautifully painted cover by Basil Gogos, Famous Monsters was...well...INfamous for republishing stories from earlier issues to fill space when "monster news" got sparse. But more often than not, it would issue forth some pearl of rarity. That still of Jack Pierce applying Boris Karloff's Frankenstein make-up that you had never seen before, or that shot of the animation models from King Kong lined up like kids waiting to get on a bus. Forry's Famous Monsters was the only source for those images and they came from his private collection.

In the '90's I had the pleasure of going to his house to see the collection for myself. Forry, as always, was gentle, friendly and loved engaging his fans with stories that ranged from his early love of monsters and his friendship with Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen, to the passing of his wife.

I learned later on that decade that Forry had, unfortunately, been cheated out of much of his treasures by a selfish collector. That was the beginning of the end of Mr. Ackerman.

So after suffering this indignity, and bad health Forry, hopefully can find peace among the other Famous Monsters of Filmland he loved so dearly.

The Joy of RE-SPAMMING

Hey Kids!

So today, as I hit the delete button about 10 times to erase the spam in my inbox, I had a realization: These are potential PHANTOM HARBOR VIEWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, how do I know that the customer service person at Crate & Barrel isn't a rabid horror fanatic? Or the guys that run the Libertarian campaign for candidate Bob Barr? Maybe they want to see an animated story about Goblins? The world is a big place and those nimrods at "The Yard" who invite me to lame parties in Santa Monica just might squeal with delight at the antics of The Captain!

Ahhhhhh!!!!! I stand in the light of a brave, new world. A spamless world where every individual that sends me offers to procure Valium from Canada or help me increase the size of my manhood might be the next person that goes to my site and proudly purchases a Phantom Harbor T-Shirt (if I ever finish the cotton-picking design!).

But why just read about this on my blog? I'm sure you get TONS of spam a day from all sorts of people who impose upon your mailbox. Why not impose back and support your favorite new Horror Web Site! Load the cannons and SPAM BACK!

What's the worst that could happen???? The spam stops coming to your mailbox?

Baby Steps

Hey Kids!

So, a few minor miracles happening:

I ordered another 500 postcards that will be sent to comic book stores all over America as soon as they arrive! Hopefully they'll show up at KNB before the studio closes for the winter break!

Closing in on a final T-Shirt design. Was about to upload a design and got cold feet at the last minute. "I can do better than THAT!" The new design is a cooler variation on what I had originally drawn. It is a specter twisting around the iconic lighthouse ruin. Of course, I'll let you all know when it is available for purchase at CafePress.com

The design for EELVICK the Strega Mare is nearly complete and what's even better - the perfect performer from my circle of friends has accepted the part!

Her name is Yanna Nirvana (no, really) and we became friends because of our mutual friend, superstar underground filmmaker Sebastian. I acted with Yanna in "Heart Attack From Hell" a film by Sebastian (that we still need to finish!) and I thought she was awesome. She's going to be fun - especially if she can take the physical torture of the make-up. If there's anyone who can handle it - it is Yanna! Welcome aboard!

SomeTHING to enjoy while you're waiting...

Hey Kids!

I know you are patiently waiting any new media on the Phantom Harbor site, so why not enjoy the antics of those ghouls at SPOOKY TIME? What is SPOOKY TIME, you may ask? It is the brain-child of Brian Goehring and Joe Giles - a throwback to when local television stations used to produce horror hosts like Zacherley, The Ghoul, Morgus the Magnificent, etc.

The boys have been at it for over a year now and have produced several wonderfully idiotic episodes what will leave you laughing and bewildered. So join Wolfshime Von Wormwood, Grimley the Grave Digger, and Eye-Van the nightwatchman for some spooky fun.

As they would say: "Go Spook Yourself!"

Phantom Harbor Swag

Hey Kids! So the design for the first Phantom Harbor T-Shirt should be done early this week which means that they should be available by the end of the first week of December.

Just so you all know, I don't intend on ever posting behind-the-scenes photos here on the site. I've decided to just post those on my Facebook account. So, if you are really interested in how things are progressing (or how they have progressed), sign onto Facebook and add me as a friend.

Postcards have been distributed in some outlets across the Los Angeles area. Look for them at HALLOWEEN TOWN and DARK DELICACIES in Burbank, SWORK, THE CACTUS GALLERY, and MELT TOO in the Eagle Rock Area. Sad thing is - I've nearly run out of my first run!

Will be ordering more this week and hope to get them to Comic Book and Horror destinations across the U.S.

Welcome to the Phantom Harbor Blog

Hey Kids!

This is Shannon Shea, the creator of Phantom Harbor, and I'd like to welcome you to this forum where you can share thoughts, ask questions, and get information on the upcoming episodes.

As many of you already know, I'm primarily a one-man operation, although I've been fortunate enough to enlist the aid of my wife and some of my friends who's talents are far superior to mine. This does make it difficult to produce episodes with the kind of frequency both you and I would like.

So where am I with Episode 2?

The animation story is written. It is about Cowboys, Indians, and a Werewolf as indicated in the first show. The live action script is being written now and then it is on to storyboarding. I've learned that storyboarding is a MUST when you are producing a show with no money. I have to make sure that everything is composed just right so that I am only building for the boards. I have no room for slop. What you see is what you get.

I'm designing a new creature for the live action and I think it is gonna be killer! The goblin was fun and creepy - I'm hoping this one will be scary and unnerving. But don't be too quick to write off the goblin. He's a fixture on the ship and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him. Also, be prepared to see a bit more of thie ship this time out. That is going to take a little magic, since I shoot this show in my one-car garage but know that I'm working on it.

Every episode is basically two shows in one: the animated story and the live action "wrap around" so you can imagine the amount of work it takes to get it done.

So now it is back to work. I'll try to add posts frequently so you can keep up with the show's production and you won't keep hitting the site and being disappointed.

Oh, wait, some other things about the web site:

1.) The Captain's Quarters will have a new button soon that will link to a section of short video messages from him. Just so you can see what he's up to and thinking about from time to time.

2.) Nearly ready to open the store!!!! Okay, I'm working out opening a "store" on Cafepress.com. Designing T-Shirts, etc. until I can begin manufacturing my own products. This should happen soon so you can hopefully do a little holiday shopping.

3.)This new blog. I'm not sure how to add posts, but please do if you are so inclined. I'd love to hear from you.
